Resume: It is a distant galaxy, in the far future year, 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet and the only source of Melange, a vital drug used by Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two families, the Atreides and the Harkonnens, fight one another for sole control of the Melange mining operations on Arrakis. When Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen, Duke Leto's son, Paul, and Paul's mother, the Lady Jessica, flee deep into the desert of Arrakis. There, they are befriended by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Under the influence of Melange, Paul learns he has special powers and, that he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman under his leadership, forms an army of warriors, and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, who is in league with the Harkonnens. Paul vows to avenge his father's murder, and sets out to liberate Arrakis and its people from the Emperor's rule, and to fulfill his destiny /

When I first saw Dune I knew I was seeing something special. It is the only science fiction film that creates such a unique and different world that you could actually believe it existing someday. I rank Dune up there with sci-fi greats such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Metropolis, and Blade Runner.
I know that when Dune was released it received mixed reviews, and failed at the US box office. Yet this film is much better than the usual sci-fi fluff, and it's originality can be pointed to the great David Lynch. I've read that had the film not failed he was going to direct two sequels. But it was considered a failure then, and now he refuses to talk about. Hopefully someday Universal will allow him to re-cut Dune to his liking, but I believe that the theatrical cut most likely was his cut.
If you pay attention to Dune you'll see one of the most thought provoking and inspiring films ever made. Beautifully shot and wonderfully acted with special effects that enhance the film, and don't take it over like the recent mini-series. And yes I have read the book, and I liked it just as much. (10/10.

Having read the first three books before I saw the film (at its original release) I was incredibly impressed with what had been achieved within the time-frame of the movie. It is an elaborate, well-staged and acted precis - mainly of book one and ending with the close of book three. I have the Blu-ray release, and watch it annually (roughly speaking. Without familiarity with the books, I don't understand how anyone could make sense of the film, but clearly, many have.
I guess it's a failure, a failure because it demands close attention (and audiences have had increasingly shorter attention spans as time has gone on) and because it grabs bits of the books without being really able to achieve a smoothly flowing story-line. But this is because the stories are so detailed, extensive and complex, that it is virtually impossible to encompass the material in one movie. Here, the virtually impossible came closer to being achieved than I would have believed possible. On that, I see it as a minor masterpiece, but only as a supplement to, at least, the first book. Buy the book then don't miss his movie. In this context it is a remarkable achievement.
